Growing up in California, Mario held the Junior High record in the mile. He was fast. Folks said he had lots of potential, that he was a natural. Mario will tell you, "You shouldn't tell a kid he's a natural, he won't think he has to work for it. Whether you are a natural or not, you always have to work for it."
Mario has lived chronically homeless in Seattle for years. Life on the streets has taken a big toll on him, both emotionally and physically. He's slowed down a great deal since those early years. Right now he has 8% use of his heart. He's not sure how much longer he has.
Fortunately a friend just gave him an RV to live in. It's in horrible shape but at least it has roof and a door, which is something Mario needed right now with his health issues.
He told me his goal is to get a car and drive to California to see his family before he dies. I asked him if he has a Driver's License and he said no, but he wants to get one. He's taken the Knowledge Exam several times and failed, said his worry about not being able to pass has kept him from trying again.
Two days ago I told him if he picks up a Study Manual from the DMV we can study together and I'll go with him for emotional support when he takes the test. Yesterday he called and told me he has the manual! Looks like I'll be getting an opportunity to brush up on my driving knowledge!
I am hoping the community can raise funds for the $40 Knowledge Exam and the $70 Skills Exam. Any leftover funds will be used to purchase cleaning supplies for Mario's new RV.
Please donate to our Venmo account @YouKnowMeNow or our PayPal account @CircleOfTen. All funds will go to helping Mario. No funds will go to YKMN.
A heartfelt THANKS to this community for stepping in to support folks struggling without their basic needs being met. Sending you, Mario, a bigBIG COMMUNITY LOVE!
